Walk besteht aus reiner Schurwolle, also geschorener Wolle vom lebenden Schaf. Das Wollgarn wird zuerst zu lockerem Stoff gestrickt, dann kommt der wichtige Teil des „Walkens“: dabei wird die Wolle im warmen Wasser gepresst, bewegt und aneinander gerieben. Dabei schrumpft der Wollstoff um 20-60% zusammen und es entsteht eine dickere Struktur mit Lufteinschlüssen, die das Gewebe wärmend und temperaturausgleichend machen.
