South Tyrolean Christmas traditions

Stroll through one of South Tyrol's Christmas markets with a hot mulled wine in your hand, enjoy a slice of Luis Trenker Panettone in a cosy lounge or spend precious time with your family baking Christmas treats together: Experience the magic of Christmas with festive traditions from South Tyrol!

Off to the Christmas market

Follow the scent of mulled wine, cinnamon and apple strudel, admire traditional South Tyrolean handicrafts and let yourself be carried away by the pre-Christmas hustle and bustle. You can experience the Christmas season in an authentic way at the Christmas markets in South Tyrol. In addition to the five ‘big’ Christmas markets in Bolzano, Merano, Bressanone, Vipiteno and Brunico, there are many other smaller Christmas markets in the mountains and valleys that are well worth a visit, such as the Christmas market in Chiusa, the Advent market in Glorenza, the Advent market in Sarentino.

A panettone for connoisseurs

Panettone - a masterpiece of Italian baking and a real delicacy at Christmas time! Originally from Milan, the fluffy yeast cake with candied fruit has long since established itself in South Tyrol and enjoys great popularity. Our favourite: the Luis Trenker Panettone, which is handmade in the traditional South Tyrolean bakery Stampfl. It was inspired by the typical South Tyrolean apple strudel and contains candied apples, pine nuts and marzipan - a unique pastry that you can buy in all Luis Trenker stores.

South Tyrolean ‘Spitzbuben’ recipe

Preparation (about 35 pieces) | Mix 125g butter until fluffy, add 125g icing sugar and stir until smooth. Add ½ pack of vanilla sugar, a little grated lemon zest, a pinch of salt and a dash of rum. Stir together one whole egg and one egg yolk. Add 2 tablespoons of milk, 300g of wheat flour and ½ packet of baking powder and knead into a smooth dough. Leave to rest in cling film in a cool place for about 1 hour. Roll out the dough, cut out the biscuits and bake at 180 degrees for 10 minutes. Leave the biscuits to cool, spread with raspberry or apricot jam and join the two halves together. Sprinkle with icing sugar and allow the jam to dry for 2-3 days before placing the biscuits in a tin.
