Since 1892

Past and future. Two sides of the same coin.

“You have to lose track of what home is, before you can truly call it yours.”

Luis Trenker was born in St. Ulrich...

in the Grödental valley, South Tyrol, son of a painter and sculptor. It comes as no surprise that he spoke both the South Tyrolean German dialect and Ladin, an ancient Raeto-Romanance dialect, as he grew up in Gröden, a melting pot of cultures. Nowadays, Ladin is only spoken in a few regions in northern Italy.

He went to secondary school Innsbruck...

where he studied Italian as a foreign language. He had already started working as a mountain and ski guide during his time off. He recognised the strong connection existing between him and the mountains of South Tyrol.

During World War I. ...

Luis Trenker fought in Galicia for the Austro-Hungarian Empire .

1915: His skills acquired as a mountain guide were used to fight the Italian army when the war broke out on the Alps.

1918: At the end of the war he was awarded the rank of lieutenant for his achievements.

The first talks...

about a film begin. Arnold Fanck employed Trenker as a mountain guide for the film “Mountain of Destiny”. Ultimately, the film symbolised Trenker’s debut as an actor, as the first actor they had chosen could not climb.

He completed his architecture studies...

in Graz, following which he opened a studio in Bozen, together with the still unknown Clemens Holzmeister. Trenker was also an athlete, competing on the Italian bobsleigh team during the 1924 Winter Olympics.

1927: Italy passed a new law which stated that only Italian degrees were valid in the country. This increasingly hampered Trenker’s efforts of working as an architect. He consequently shifted his focus on the film industry.

Trenker debuted as a director...

with the silent film, “Fight for the Matterhorn”.

1934: “Der verlorene Sohn” (The Prodigal Son) was instrumental in Trenker’s international success. The scenes secretly filmed on the streets of New York contributed to the impact the film had on famous neorealist directors, including film legends such as Luchino Visconti, Roberto Rossellini and Vittorio de Sica.

“I felt so alone and small beholding this enormous city… that’s when I thought: I simply have to film here.”

To the movie box

“The Emperor of California” represented...

his acclaimed break into Hollywood. He filmed the deserts of the western hemisphere by consciously portraying them as a spectacular and threatening environment. The film is still considered one of the best European westerns of all times.

“The Mountain Calls” represented...

his most successful film as a director and main actor, offering its viewers the first ascent of the Matterhorn.

”Trenker’s film is the portrayal of pure mountaineering performance and becomes the symbol of man’s relation with nature” (Heyne’s Film Lexicon, 1996)

“The Langkofel for us represents the same that the Matterhorn does for Switzerland. I’d hazard that it [the Langkofel] is slightly less intimidating, more beautiful, and more Gothic in appearance.” (Luis Trenker)

”Mountain smugglers” was Marianne Hold’s

stepping stone to the film industry and yet another success for Trenker. The book was published in 1951 and represented Trenker’s success as an author, too.

1955: “Flucht in die Dolomiten” (Escape to the Dolomites) is a film which stands out for its spectacular and impressive scenes and just as impressive actors.

The legendary series...

1974: Trenker was a founding member of the Bavarian section of the “Freier Deutscher Autorenverband” (The Free Association of German Authors). At one point, he was also its President.

Luis Trenker passed away...

at 97 in Bozen and is buried in the family plot in St. Ulrich in Gröden. The town of St. Ulrich built the Luis Trenker Promenade in his honour.

“Even when the names of the big stars […] are nearly forgotten, there will be no one who doesn’t know his name when seeing one of his films or reading something about mountains.” (Carl Zuckmayer speaking about Luis Trenker)
